What ‘blue arrow’? If you read the title of this post and ask yourself “what blue arrow?” then you’re not alone. Google is all about subtle changes which is why their changes, while very effective, aren’t always immediately noticed.
Take a look below to understand what we’re talking about:

Simply speaking, the blue arrow marks the first listing. It appears next to the top result and acts much like a cursor does, allowing you to move up/down the results page by using the up and down arrows. This newest enhancement may add even more traffic to the #1 and #2 listings, another reason for you website owners to look into Search Engine Optimization.
Google is trying to make online searching and keyboard navigation easier for users. This blue arrow is among some of the most recent changes that Google has made to their site, all part of the latest Google Instant update. Google Instant recently changed the dynamics of search behavior by automatically showing results as you type, allowing us to get search results faster then before.
A post dedicated only to Google Instant and our benefits from it will be added soon, stay tuned.
i think that google did this on purpose to get more people to click on the 1st search results, which is usually the sponsored link. this gets google more money right?
That is a relevant point Germaine. Over 90% of Google’s revenue comes from their paid advertisement so without pointing too many fingers, there is some truth to what you imply.
I read somewhere that this change reduced people’s search times by 2 seconds making them more productive 🙂
You’re right shannondghui but it’s the Google Instant that reduced searcher’s time by 1-2 seconds on each search, not necessarily the blue arrow.
Thanks for the posts.
